Flying With Toddler Twins? Alone?

It's possible! And it's not completely awful and stressful either. Well, I didn't find it to be anyways! Cohen and Kason are 16-months old and they had been on six flights before I took them alone, and they had been awesome on every one of those, so I wasn't hugely worried. To be honest, the part that was worrying me the most was getting through Customs.

My top tips for flying alone with toddler twins:

  • Try to take only one carry-on bag onboard
    • The less you have to carry, the better! Especially if you can't be guaranteed a stroller through the airport.
  • Take lots of snacks
    • They are awesome to distract kids! I took lots of fruit and some sandwiches. Just don't forget to dispose of any uneaten fruit before leaving the plane - you don't want to be getting any fines!
  • Call the airline before you fly and request ground assistance
    • Seriously, I would consider this essential. The ground assistance we got was absolutely fantastic, and if we hadn't of had it, our trips would have been HARD.
  • Purchase at least one CARES harness
    • This was awesome. It meant that I didn't have to deal with the bulkiness of a big carseat onboard the plane, and the boys squirmed much less when strapped in with this than just sitting on my lap with the infant lap belt. I will definitely be getting a second one before we fly again.
  • Use backpack harnesses in the airports
    • I ended up tucking the tail of one boy's backpack up and holding the other one. That meant that I only had to watch the boy whom I wasn't holding onto as I knew the one I was holding onto couldn't get far enough to get into mischief!
  • New toys and books and 'new' toys and books
    • We bought Cohen and Kason a few new toys and books which I wrapped up and gave them on the flights. These kept them entertained for a decent amount of time! I also hid away some of their favourite toys and books in the months leading up the trip so they were 'new' again to them! I highly recommend medium-sized cars – both the boys enjoyed rolling them on the tray tables.
  • If you can choose your seats, the second-to-back ones are the best.
    • These are the seats we had on our flight back, and meant that we could get the CARES harness over the back of the seat (I don't know if you can on the very back seats), and, most importantly, the boys could walk to the bathroom when I needed to change their nappies. That way I didn't need to bother another passenger or a crew member to watch the other boy while I changed his brother.
  • Don't stress about it!
    • Just make sure you are as organised as you can be, accept all offers of help. The less stressed you are, the less stressed the kids will be!
Flying alone with the boys is definitely something that I would tackle again if I needed to. It was nowhere near as stressful as a lot of people make it out to be!

The weather was pretty much crap for the vast majority of the time we were in NZ. The first couple of days were nice, and then the last couple of days were too. This was on one of our last days there, it was beautifully warm, so the boys got to eat their lunch outside. I love this pic of Kase!

This massive carving is at the Hamilton Gardens, and I think it's freaken awesome! There are so many little creatures and parts to it, it's just amazing. You can kinda get an idea of the size of it with Kason and Cohen standing in front of it.

I've been riding horses my entire life. Until not long before we moved to Adelaide, I'd had at least one horse since I was about 2. I REALLY wanted to get Cohen and Kason on a pony, and luckily some of Dad's clients had a perfect little shetland - Bonnie! They LOVED sitting on her back, and she was such a little champ about it too :-)

Kason stacked it down Mum & Dad's front concrete stairs the night of Mum's party and grazed his upper lip - you can kinda see it in this picture of him all rugged up in blue for a trolley ride! My Mum knitted him this hat (and Cohen a green one), she was about to post it over to us when we arrived!

Kason and Cohen zonked out in their pram at Nana's birthday party! They had such a big day, and met lots of people, and they did so awesome. Cohen went to sleep easily...Kason not so much. My sister-in-law had to drive her Mum home, so she took Kason in the car with her, and he fell asleep quickly in the car. Thankfully both boys stayed asleep until I was ready to leave, despite all the noise!

My Dad is a farmer. He bought Kason and Cohen a pair of gumboots each on our last visit, and now they actually fit! And they got these jumpers, which are the same pattern/look as the good old Kiwi swandri. Dad just LOVES that the boys are all decked out for the farm!

Off for a walk

This is one of my new favourites!
After we surprised Mum the night before (she had NO idea Kason, Cohen & I were coming over), she took the day off work, and we took Cohen and Kason to the Hamilton Gardens. This walkway around/over the back of the lake is fairly long, and Kason walked the entire distance of it, on his own, there AND back. At this point, he had only really been walking for a couple of weeks!

Flying!

Day 297 by Road2Chaos2

This is, obviously, Kason and Cohen waiting at the gate to board our plane to NZ. We had a great flight, even though they tried to kick us off AFTER we had boarded and got all settled in our seats.
I booked our tickets in person to make sure I could fly alone with two infants. We also rang at least five times to re-check and re-check and re-check. Got onboard and I was told that I couldn't fly by myself with them. I was well unimpressed. Thankfully there was a lovely, LOVELY Dad sitting behind us who offered to hold one of the boys on take-off and landing. Once the captain had confirmed that was ok, we were sorted!
It really was an awesome flight, the boys did fantastically well. Kason fell asleep for about 1.5 hours in the middle of the flight...Cohen, on the other hand, fell asleep right as the pilot said, "Cabin crew, please arm the doors for landing", so he only got about 30 mins sleep.
I was so incredibly impressed with them both, and so were many of the other passengers - many of them commented on how well behaved they were. Me = proud Mama!

I have a good excuse!

I've been majorly slacking on the posts this month. I do have a pretty good excuse though! At the beginning of the month, I took Kason and Cohen back to New Zealand for three weeks. It was my Mum's 60th birthday, and she had NO idea that we were coming over! She knew that there was no way that Simon could get time off work, and she just didn't think that I might come by myself with the boys. My Dad knew we were coming and picked us up from the airport after telling Mum that he had a meeting in Auckland. When we got to their place in Hamilton, Dad carried both of the boys inside and I snuck in another door and videoed her reaction! Two of my brothers and their families were there for Mum's party too, although she knew they were going to be there. They didn't know I was going to be there either until my Uncle spilled the beans on Facebook...I was able to delete the message before Mum saw it, but not before my sisters-in-law discovered it!

Anyways, we had a (mostly) great time, but we all missed Simon something chronic. The boys faces when he picked us up on Sunday morning were just priceless, they both had huge grins for most of the rest of the day.
While we were there, Cohen got an eye tooth (strange, I know!) and a massive molar. Kason's are pretty close. Kase did, however, get a pretty nasty throat infection. He had a temperature of 39.2C which we could not get down, so we rushed him to A & E. It was a Friday night and there was a Rugby World Cup game on in the city. We weren't looking forward to the wait, but thought we might get taken through fairly quickly considering Kason's age. We got there and there was no-one else there! The only wait was while I filled in the form. Anyways, after a few days on antibiotics, he was feeling much better.

Got lots to do tonight, so I better go and get things sorted. I still have to sort out and upload my pics, so when they're done, I'll write more about our trip!

Just Some Bullet Points, ‘cause I’m awesome like that

Things have been crazy around here the last few days...and it's really not looking like things going to calm down anytime in the next few weeks. Oh well, we'll get back to some kind of 'normalcy' at some point.

  • Cohen has cut tooth #9. It's an eye tooth...you know, one of the ones that is supposed to be one of the last teeth kids cut.
  • Kason has discovered a love of building towers with his blocks. He builds towers all over the place. This morning he even tried to build a tower with his apple slices and blocks...wasn't too successful!
  • Cohen has discovered a love of knocking block towers down. He follows Kason around and smashed his towers over. Giggling the entire time, of course.
  • Luckily, Kason doesn't seem to mind, it means he can build more towers!
  • Both the boys love to play on the slide! If Kason thinks that Cohen is taking too long to go down, he will go around behind him and push him.
  • I love to read. I'm thinking about getting a Kindle. Contemplating it.
  • I actually bought myself a new outfit today. As in, three pieces of clothing! This never happens, people. I am quite excited, and I hope I get to wear it soon.
  • I'm hungry. I don't know what I feel like for dinner, therefore, I am procrastinating by writing this post.
  • Simon finishes work early tonight, this makes me happy.
  • I still have lots I need to do tonight.

That's all for now! Exciting, huh?!
